2. Brief Description: Helium Survey is a cutting-edge mineral exploration technique (for oil, gas) based on detecting and analyzing helium concentrations in soil and the atmosphere. As a byproduct of radioactive decay deep within the Earth, helium serves as a natural indicator of subsurface geological processes. 

3. How It Works 

v  Helium as a Tracer: Helium (He) is released during the decay of uranium, thorium, and other elements, migrating through rock layers to the surface. 

v  Sampling: Specialized sensors collect soil gas samples. 

v  Predictive Modeling: Elevated Helium concentrations correlate with oil/gas reservoirs.

Helium Survey is a groundbreaking technology that could revolutionize mineral exploration by minimizing environmental impact and accelerating oil/gas fields discovery. 

  • Helium gas

    • Noble gas

    • The second most abundant element in the Universe after hydrogen (up 25 % of the universe)

    • Extremely light (second lightest after hydrogen)

    • Has the smallest molecular size (0.2 nm)

    • Physically stable, Inert and does not form compounds with other chemical elements

    • Helium is less soluble in water than any known gas

    • Has a Non-biogenic origin, unlike other gases (methane, hydrogen)

    • Has a high migration ability

    • Radiogenic heavy isotope 4He is formed during the radioactive alpha decay of elements of the U-Th series

    • Primordial light and rare isotope 3He is produced in the Earth’s mantle as a result of nuclear reactions or could be trapped during the accretion of the Earth

  • Migration

    • Helium migrates into the sedimentary layer f rom basement rocks (or hot shale), migrating along tectonic faults and through highly fractured zones

    • The distribution of helium in the sedimentary layer depends on various factors, such as the proximity of the basement and shale, the age of the basement and source rock, the capacity and permeability of the sedimentary layer, and the presence of deep faults

    • There are two main mechanisms for helium migration

    • One is the self-migration mechanism, where the flow has a jet-like migration character and is coupled to velocity, porosity, and saturation

    • Helium migrates along tectonic faults and through highly f ractured zones

    • The other mechanism is carrier gas transport, where helium moves upward along with a “carrier” gas such as methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), or nitrogen (N2)

    • Seal layers, such as clay rocks, do not hinder helium migration

    • The concentration and partial pressure of helium in the section decrease as the distance f rom the basement increases

    • The migration rate can be up to 1,000 meters per day
